Talk: The Impact of the Japanese Employees’ Solution-focused Interactions on the Work Related Variables: Suggestions from Three Surveys.
In our research supported by an EBTA research grant in 2011, my colleagues and I developed a psychological major called the general solution-focused attitude scale (GSFAS) designed to assess workers’ solution-oriented cognitions and behaviors. We conducted three surveys using the GSFAS in Japan.
First, we surveyed employees in a Japanese restaurant chain and found that the regression model expressing the influence of solution-focused interactions on work engagement was statistically significant. In the second survey, municipal employees from a Japanese local government were examined. The results showed that the regression model of the workers’ solution-focused interactions significantly predicted their commitment to the workplace and their subjective evaluation of the department’s work performance. In the third survey, we studied the solution-focused attitudes of the employees working at a Japanese manufacturing company. The results revealed a significant relationship between the surveyed workers’ higher levels of solution-oriented attitudes, lower levels of work stress and workload, and higher levels of support from others.
In conclusion, the GSFAS can be a useful tool to evaluate the results of solution-focused practices and to determine employees’ relationships in a workplace.
